The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Youth Wing has expressed its unwavering support for Member of Parliament for the Abuakwa South constituency, Samuel Atta Akyea, following his recent remarks about former President John Dramani Mahama.
The MP is reported to have called Mr. Mahama as a “drunkard,” a statement that has sparked outrage within the National Democratic Congress (NDC), prompting a demand for an apology from the NDC’s General Secretary, Fiifi Kwetey.
Retract and apologise for derogatory Mahama comment – NDC tells Atta Akyea
In a statement, the NPP Youth Wing, led by National Youth Organizer Salam Mustapha, dismissed the NDC’s demands, asserting that no apology will be rendered.
The Youth Wing accused the NDC of hypocrisy, citing previous derogatory comments made by NDC officials, including Fiifi Kwetey and NDC National Chairman Asiedu Nketia, against Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
The statement also referenced a past comment by Dr. Kwabena Duffuor, a prominent NDC member, who allegedly claimed that Mahama had a “serious and chronic alcohol addiction problem.”
The NPP Youth Wing argued that, Mr. Atta Akyea’s remarks were in line with these earlier allegations and therefore justified.
The NPP Youth Wing stressed its readiness to engage in a “fire for fire” campaign against the NDC as the 2024 elections approach.
“John Dramani Mahama himself few days ago called Dr. Bawumia a liar without any apology or reprimand. Now, just a small punch from Hon. Samuel Atta Akyea and they are bleating? I can assure the NDC that we will return fire for fire. Our presidential candidate is a human being too with blood running in his veins just like their demigod that they seek to protect. We will not allow the NDC to turn him into their punching bag,” a part of the statement said.
