The leader of the Movement for Change, Mr Alan Kyerematen, has sparked a fresh debate on the relevance of the Ministry of Information, pledging to dismantle the ministry if elected in Ghana’s December 7 election.
Speaking at the “Media Encounter with Alan Kyerematen” event, the politician questioned the utility of the ministry, describing it as a “waste pipe” that does not add significant value to the government’s operations.
“What does the Ministry of Information do? I am not interested in a whole ministry talking about government projects,” Kyerematen remarked.
“Ask all the mature economies if they have something like this? So it’s a waste pipe and it doesn’t add anything.”
The former Trade Minister expressed his belief that the funds currently allocated to the Ministry of Information could be better utilized in other areas, promising to repurpose these resources to support more impactful projects should he be voted into power.
“We don’t need the Ministry of Information; we can save the money and use it to support other projects,” he said.
“I’m sorry about my friends at the Ministry of Information, but I will turn you all into business people. The reason I am confident is that I have been around,” Kyerematen stated.
He then recounted his involvement in the restructuring of the Information Services Department (ISD) in the early 1980s, a project he led and for which he was later commended by Totobi Quakyi, a former Information Minister under the Rawlings regime.
