The Member of Parliament for South Dayi, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor has expressed concerns about the government’s recent decision to deploy soldiers to the border.

Speaking in an interview on Adom FM’s morning show Dwaso Nsem, Wednesday, he suggested that the deployment might be politically motivated, given that it is an election year.

Mr. Dafeamekpor questioned the need for military presence at the border, especially since the government has not provided a clear reason for it.

“The government’s decision to deploy soldiers is nothing more than a political manoeuvre. It is clear that their actions are aimed at influencing the upcoming elections rather than addressing the genuine concerns of our farmers and the economic impact of this ban” he said.

Mr. Dafeamekpor also criticized the timing of the decision, noting that even when food prices were high, the government did not ban imports, so he is puzzled by the current export ban.

His comments followed a statement from Defence Minister Dominic Nitiwul, who announced that security personnel would be deployed to border towns, particularly in the northern part of the country, to enforce a ban on grain exports.

The government, through Minister for Food and Agriculture Dr. Bryan Acheampong, has imposed this ban due to ongoing dry spells that are impacting food production.

Nitiwul said the deployment aims to prevent the smuggling of grains into neighbouring countries and avoid potential food shortages.

But the NDC MP, questioned the necessity of this action, pointing out that it is currently raining in the north and disputing the claim that there is a severe drought.

He also mentioned that, he plans to make a formal statement and invite the minister to address these issues.
