NUGS vows to shield union from political influence

-

The President of the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS), Mr. Daniel Oppong Kyeremeh, has vowed to ensure that the student body is free from political infiltration, emphasising the importance of maintaining a strong, independent student front.

In an interview with JoyNews’ Emefa Apawu on the EduTalk Show, Mr. Kyeremeh highlighted the union’s commitment to standing fearlessly for the rights and concerns of students across the country.

Mr. Kyeremeh acknowledged the long-standing perception that NUGS has been politicised, with political affiliations often influencing the union’s ability to advocate effectively on behalf of students.

He noted that in the past, political infiltration had hindered the union’s efforts to address critical issues affecting students.

According to him, the presence of political biases within the union made it challenging to criticise certain government policies, especially when those in power shared the same political affiliation as union leaders.

“Over the past years, people have seen the union as a politicised front. There was a lot of political infiltration which prevented us from embarking on many advocacies,” Mr. Kyeremeh indicated.

He emphasised that his administration, along with his executives, has worked to break away from these influences, advocating for the interests of students without fear or favour.

The NUGS President also underscored the critical role of education in empowering the youth. He argued that if anyone wanted to weaken the youth in Ghana, targeting the educational sector would be the most effective approach.

This, he said, is why his administration is particularly focused on ensuring that the educational sector is well-regulated and that the Ministry of Education and other relevant agencies are held accountable.

“The reason why I am so focused on our educational sector is that if you want to weaken the young people in this country, the main medium you could use is education. So, we are very keen on ensuring that the necessary measures are put in place,” the NUGS President stated.

He further assured that his administration would closely monitor the Ministry of Education and other related agencies to ensure that the right actions are taken to benefit students.

As the NUGS elections approach, Mr. Kyeremeh is determined to lead the union in a new direction, free from political distractions. He stressed the importance of maintaining the union’s independence to effectively address the challenges facing students. By doing so, NUGS aims to reclaim its position as a genuine front for student advocacy in Ghana.

Mr. Kyeremeh promised the Ghanaian students that the union will be politically neutral, and a student-centered union could mark a significant shift in the union’s approach to advocacy and representation.
