The flagbearer of Yellow Ghana, Samuel Apea-Danquah has filed a Right to Information (RTI) to the Youth and Sports Minister and the Director General of Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) requesting information on the payments for the 13th African Games.
The RTI request comes in the wake of the controversy over the payment to GBC to produce and broadcast the 18-day tournament hosted in Accra.
The Sports Minister, Mustapha Ussif when he appeared before the Public Accounts Committee(PAC) revealed that GBC received over $3 million for the task.
However, GBC’s Director General, Prof. Amin Alhassan, quickly responded, stating that GBC’s actual share was only $105,000, with the remaining funds forwarded to third parties.
This discrepancy has led to public outcry and calls for greater accountability.
Mr Apea-Danquah in his RTI request is therefore demanding details on confirmation of payments, agreements and contracts, the rationale for payments to third parties, financial audit reports, clarification of discrepancies and compliance with legal and financial regulations.
For GBC, the presidential aspirant is seeking information on media rights and financial handling of the games as well as the legal representation, TV License project, web hosting, IT management and corporate governance associated with the tournament.
