The Minority in Parliament has criticized Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer, for his pledge to limit ministerial appointments to 50 if he becomes Ghana’s next president.
Speaking at the NPP’s manifesto launch in Takoradi on Sunday, August 18, Dr Bawumia argued that a smaller number of ministers could still deliver efficient governance.
However, Deputy Minority Whip, Ahmed Ibrahim questioned the credibility of this promise, pointing out that the number of officials working under Dr Bawumia as Vice President already surpasses the total number of ministers appointed by President Akufo-Addo, raising doubts about his commitment to downsizing.
“In Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s office alone, the number of technical advisors and spokespersons exceeds the 123 ministers he mentions. Anyone without an official title driving a V8 likely works in Dr. Bawumia’s office. This is why land cruisers are now commonplace.
“You can’t propose to operate with 50 ministers while having over 100 special aides in your office. That needs to be addressed.”
Mr Ibrahim also expressed frustration over the NPP manifesto’s omission of plans to address Ghana’s debt servicing challenges.
“You’ve collapsed the economy, and I expected them to outline how they plan to manage our debt servicing. Their silence on this issue shows they are not being honest or transparent with Ghanaians.
“Ghanaians must understand that we are not servicing our debt currently. We have been given until 2026 to begin repayments. When that time comes, it will bring significant hardship because we are deferring our suffering.”
