Asante Akyem Agogo farmers have called on the government for aid after a Forestry Commission task force destroyed their plantain farms.
Several acres of plantain farms belonging to some chiefs and farmers in Abrewapong, a farming community in Asante Akyem North in the Ashanti Region, have allegedly been destroyed by the Forestry Commission over a land dispute.
At a press conference, the chief of Asante Akyem Abrewapong, Nana Berima Opoku Nyantakyi, called on the government for assistance.
He expressed frustration and concern over the loss of their livelihoods and called for immediate government intervention to resolve the issue.
According to him, the Asante Akyem Agogo area is renowned as one of the leading plantain-producing area in Ghana, playing a crucial role in supplying the country with this staple crop.
The destruction of these farms is expected to have a substantial impact on the local economy and food supply, leaving many farmers devastated.
Some farmers also expressed concern about how the Forestry Commission destroyed their plantain farms.
