In a significant breakthrough, the government and the Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG) have reached an agreement on the concerns of members after a series of negotiations.
This was at a meeting, held on August 19, 2024, at the Ministry of Employment, Labour Relations and Pensions (MELRP) Conference Room.
The meeting brought together representatives from MELRP, Ministry of Education (MoE), Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC), Ministry of Finance (MoF), Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), Principals of Colleges of Education (PRINCOF), CETAG, and other stakeholders.
At the meeting, CETAG requested payment of their frozen July salaries, which the Government Team agreed to once the strike is called off.
CETAG agreed to consult its council by August 20, 2024, and potentially call off the strike.
This agreement represents a crucial step towards resolving the issues that led to the strike in June 2024.
The Minister of Employment, Labour Relations and Pensions, Ignatius Baffour Awuah, said the government team and CETAG have demonstrated a commitment to finding solutions to the challenges facing CETAG members.
He appealed to CETAG to rethink their position to ensure students at the various colleges of education can return to the lecture room.
“We are hoping that CETAG will consult its council and tomorrow morning we will wake up to the news that the strike has been called off,” he said.
The National Trustee of CETAG, Maxwell Bunu, gave the assurance that a conclusion on the issue would be reached.
“We are committed to finding a resolution and will consult our council as agreed,” he said.
