Relief may soon be on the way for commuters using the Ofankor-Pokuase stretch of the N6 Highway, as the ongoing construction work is set to be completed by the end of September 2024.
During an interview on Accra-based Citi FM on Monday, the Chief Resident Engineer for the Pokuase-Nsawam Highway project, Ing. Kwabena Bempong, announced that the 2.3-kilometre section will soon be open to traffic.
Responding to the project’s progress, Ing. Bempong estimated that the work is about 70 per cent complete.
“So far, we have completed approximately 1.2 kilometres of asphalt, which is the first layer known as the binder,” he said.
He further explained that, the plan is to finish the remaining work on this portion and others by the end of September, allowing traffic to flow to the China Mall, with exceptions in areas where overpasses and interchanges are still under construction, including the Amasaman interchange, Pobiman overpass, and the Media area.
Ing. Bempong also provided a detailed description of the 8-lane road, which will include 2-lane service roads on each side.
He emphasized that this new infrastructure is expected to significantly reduce the heavy vehicular traffic on the stretch.
“The stretch between Ofankor and the beginning of the Pokuase Interchange, known as The White House, is about 2.3 kilometres and will feature 4 lanes in each direction, including 2-lane service roads on either side. Additionally, we have rebuilt the railway bridge to accommodate at least 2 railway lines in the future, replacing the previous single line,” he added.
