The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has apologised for the inconveniences some customers have experienced following the installation of new smart meters.
The power distribution company has also pledged to reimburse customers who had prepaid credits on their meters before they were changed.
The refund will be done by crediting the utility accounts of the customers with the full amount.
The Manager in charge of external communications at the ECG, Charles Nii Ayiku, gave the assurance amidst the apology on Adom FM’s morning show Dwaso Nsem, Monday.
This was in response to frustrations expressed by some listeners on Adom FM who use these meters.
They lamented that, the new meters run faster and consume more power than the old ones, increasing their consumption.
Others also shared that, their old meters were replaced in their absence and all attempts to get refund have proven futile.
However, Mr Ayiku said they will reimburse customers immediately once the complaint is lodged.
He has therefore urged calm and restraint, asking affected customers to reach out to ECG.
“They can call 0302611611 or send messages on our various social media platforms or visit the district offices to address the challenges for refund.
“We have already reimbursed a lot of customers in Kaneshie, Bortianor and other areas but I acknowledge our only challenge has been delays but once the customer files a report, the refund is done,” he assured.
On concerns of the meter running fast, he clarified, “The replaced meters were old and could not pick actual readings because the efficiencies were low. Just like the function of a home used car goes down. But we sincerely apologise to our customers for the inconveniences.”
