The Majority in Parliament has urged Speaker Alban Bagbin to consider using a specially constructed dome at the car park for parliamentary business scheduled for September 3, 2024.
This suggestion id due to ongoing renovation work in Parliament, which may render the Chamber unavailable for proceedings.
The Speaker had earlier recalled Members of Parliament from recess for an emergency sitting, following a petition from the Majority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin.
The Majority caucus initiated the recall due to dissatisfaction with the Speaker’s decision to adjourn sittings indefinitely on July 30, 2024.
Due to the renovations works in the Chamber, the Speaker has indicated that an alternative venue will be communicated in due course.
In response, the Second Deputy Majority Whip, Alex Tetteh Djournobuah, proposed during a media interaction that the dome, previously used during the COVID-19 pandemic, be made available for parliamentary proceedings.
“I am not seeing any renovation works going on in the Chamber, and even if it is so, we have the dome to use. During the COVID-19 period, we used the dome at the car park to conduct parliamentary business, and we can use it again to do whatever we need to do,” Djournobuah suggested.
