The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has criticized President Akufo-Addo’s decision to refer the Airbus scandal to the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP).
He argued that, it was a politically motivated move designed to sway voters.
On January 31, 2020, Ghana was named among five countries where global aerospace company Airbus SE allegedly engaged in bribery or promised payments to senior officials in exchange for business favours between 2009 and 2015, according to the UK’s Serious Fraud Office.
The scandal resulted in Airbus agreeing to a record £3 billion settlement with France, the United Kingdom, and the United States to avoid corporate criminal charges.
In response, President Akufo-Addo referred the matter to the OSP for further investigation in February 2020.
However, on Thursday, August 8, 2024, the OSP cleared former President John Mahama of any wrongdoing in the deal.
Reacting to this on Citi News, the NDC’s Head of Legal Affairs, Edudzie Tamekloe, praised the OSP’s report and reiterated the party’s stance that the initial referral was politically driven.
“Clearly, Ghana’s most corrupt president thought that by referring John Dramani Mahama for investigation, he could create a political weapon against him while the investigation was ongoing. Today, the professionalism of Kissi Agyebeng in handling this investigation has completely exonerated John Dramani Mahama in relation to the Airbus matter,” Mr Tamekloe stated.
