The Assembly Member for Denu in the Ketu South Municipality, Israel Bossman, has warned that residents may be forced to stop using electricity if the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) does not resolve ongoing issues with its billing system.
This comes after residents recently protested against what they describe as excessively high monthly tariffs, accusing the ECG of overcharging them beyond their actual electricity usage in the Denu District.
They are calling for a thorough review of the billing process to ensure fair and accurate charges.
In an interview with Citi News, Israel Bossman stressed the urgency of the situation, describing it as a form of extortion that needs to be addressed immediately.
“With immediate effect, ECG must cease disconnecting customers or consumers of the power and fix the poor nature of the billing system and also audit some meters in the enclave.
“I understand that people now take loans to pay light bills and this is not pleasant. And so trust me, a time is coming where nobody would want to use light anymore because we can’t be paying that amount of money. It is not possible. I mean something is wrong somewhere” he stated.
Meanwhile, the Public Relations Officer for the ECG in the Volta Region, Eunice Tweneboah-Kodua said the grievances of the consumers have been addressed.
“All the things that they asked us to do, management was able to do it for them. The regional police command made us aware that the people are saying that they are still bent on going on a demonstration against us. And we asked about the issues and the issues were the same things that they raised for us to work on.
“So basically that is the issue. And [on Wednesday] during the demonstration, they presented a petition and the petition has the same issues that we have worked on. Nevertheless, we are not bent on sleeping on it. Whatever thing that they want, we are still looking into it” he added.
