Lack of faith in Ghana’s judiciary troubling for electoral integrity – Kan Dapaah

National Security Minister, Albert Kan Dapaah has expressed concern about the lack of trust in the country’s judiciary among politicians.

Speaking at a forum in Accra, Mr Dapaah noted that, recent commentary by political actors ahead of the December 7 elections is troubling.

He cautioned that the judiciary should not be undermined by political rhetoric, emphasizing that “For the first time, we may witness a situation where none of the major political parties is willing to use the courts to address their grievances.”

Mr Dapaah highlighted that some senior figures in the political arena have voiced doubts about the courts’ ability to handle election-related concerns.

He warned that such sentiments could lead to a scenario ripe for chaos.

The Minister stressed the importance of establishing a robust and transparent electoral system that would ensure all parties accept the results.

He also urged Ghanaians to prioritize peace during the upcoming elections, warning against being swayed by politicians who may refuse to accept the results.

“Indeed I have heard some senior people in the political space saying that, that they have lost faith in the courts’ ability to address their concerns when it comes to elections. So this can create a situation that can set the stage for chaos.”

“And it underscores the need for us to build a robust and transparent electoral system where results coming from same will be acceptable by all parties.

“Ghanaians must also be aware of their responsibilities. They must not allow themselves to be used by politicians who lose elections. Peace is very expensive and sometimes we have to make sacrifices one time or the other to maintain it. So may nobody participate in violence. So those who lose, accept it peacefully,” he stated.
