The Korle Bu Chapter of the Federation of Allied Health Professionals has announced that it will suspend outpatient services at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital starting Friday, August 2.

This decision follows the hospital’s refusal to appoint an independent body to oversee the operations of the Allied Health professionals.

The group comprises the Ghana Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists, the Ghana Physiotherapy Association, and the Ghana Society of Radiographers, along with 15 other professional Associations.

These professionals, currently under the hospital’s Medical Directorate, believe their affairs are not being managed properly and are calling for the establishment of a dedicated directorate.

The local Chairman of the chapter, Dr. Francis Kwakye Antwi at a press conference said if their demands are not met, they will escalate their actions to a nationwide strike.

He emphasized that if the hospital’s board and management do not advertise the position of Director of Allied Health by midnight, a “work to rule” will begin on Thursday, which will escalate into a full-blown strike.

“If the board and management do not advertise for the position of Director of Allied Health by close of midnight today, they don’t take that step to advertise, on Thursday we are going to start with work to rule which will aggravate into a full-blown strike. So on Friday which is August 2, we are going to suspend all OPD services.”

“On Monday [August 5], we are going to withdraw in-patient services and on Tuesday, which is August 6, if management has still not heeded our call, we are going to go into a full-blown strike.

“When on the 6th, Korle Bu does not see any positive feedback from the management and the board, we are going to escalate it to a nationwide strike,” Dr Antwi stated.
