Police and the organizers of the La Coalition demonstration clashed over the approved protest route.
The demonstration, which started on Tuesday, July 30, seeks to draw attention to alleged unethical land seizures by political figures in the Greater Accra Region.
Protestors, including various unions and associations from the La Traditional Area, are demanding the return of state lands they claim are being unfairly distributed among the political elite.
The group is particularly concerned about the Trade Fair land, which encompasses areas occupied by Labadi Beach and La Palm Royal Beach Hotels.
They allege that, the original landowners have not received the legally required compensation.
Additionally, they have voiced concerns about the Prisons Service lands at Cantonments, where a private developer plans to redevelop the area and use part of it for private business.
During the protest, confusion erupted over the route, with the Police indicating they could not ensure the safety of protesters if they marched to Kpletso, near Burma Camp.
According to the lead organizer of the protest, claims of the protesters intending to march to Kpletso are false.
“We are not going to Kpletso. The police are acting out of fear and don’t want to confront the military. We will instead proceed to Christ the King to meet a government representative and present our petition,” told Channel One News.
He also disclosed that, the Police had refused to provide security for the protest from the start, forcing the organizers to arrange their own security.
“We are law-abiding citizens and will take responsibility for any issues that arise. We don’t shy away from challenges. The commander knows me; I am not one to run from confrontation. If there are any concerns about our conduct, let them come forward. But do not try to suppress us.”
