The Sehwi Akontombra District Assembly has taken significant steps to address the rise in teenage pregnancies and poor living standards by providing skilled training for persons with disabilities (PWDs) in the area.

The Social Welfare Director of Sehwi Akontombra District, Charlotte Abrefi, has raised concerns about the correlation between poor living standards of PWDs and the increase in teenage pregnancies.

She highlighted that, the decline in cocoa production, the primary occupation in the region, has exacerbated hardships, contributing to socio-economic challenges for PWDs and their families.

In response, the Sehwi Akontombra District Assembly, through the PWDs fund, has initiated a program aimed at offering skilled training and job opportunities to PWDs.

Speaking to Adom News’ Augustine Boah, Charlotte Abrefi emphasized that by providing training in areas such as pomade making and soap making, the Assembly aims to empower PWDs to improve their living conditions and support their families.

This initiative is expected to mitigate the socio-economic challenges that lead to teenage pregnancies.

District Chief Executive, Yawson Amoah, explained that, the Assembly is also donating essential equipment such as refrigerators, fufu pounding machines, spraying machines, hair dryers, and sewing machines to further support PWDs.

He stated that, the district Assembly’s paramount aim is to ensure equal living standards for all residents.

Meanwhile, Kwadwo Gyebi, Chairman of the Persons With Disabilities, commended the government and the district assembly for their support.

He expressed gratitude for the skilled training and equipment provided, which will enable PWDs to start their own businesses and improve their quality of life.
