Parliament has approved the first in a series of tax waivers that had previously been blocked by the Finance Committee.
The MP for Obuasi West and former Chair of the Finance Committee, Kwaku Kwarteng was accused of aligning with the Minority to block nearly $400 million in tax waivers.
However, just a week after his removal from the role, the first of these waivers has come to the floor for approval.
The approved waiver amounts to €1.5 million and is intended for the supply and installation of e-learning laboratories in Senior High Schools across the country.
Vice Chair of the Finance Committee, Carlos Ahenkora, defended the need for these waivers during a parliamentary session.
The Minority did not oppose the approval.
Minority Leader Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson explained that, the waiver was not controversial, noting that it is associated with a previously approved loan facility amounting to €11.5 million.
He clarified that the tax waiver represents about 10% of this amount and will be used to provide e-learning equipment, such as computers and laptops, to various secondary schools nationwide.
Dr. Ato Forson commended the Finance Minister for ensuring the project’s equitable distribution.
