For over a year now, waste has taken over the Black Volta and the Buipe main market in Buipe in the Central Gonja district of the Savannah region.
According to traders, this has contributed to flooding in the area and a high rate of typhoid in the community.
However, traders, who are mainly fishmongers, lament about the waste in the market and the Black Volta.
Asana Yakubu, a fishmonger, said they are tired of sitting in filth to sell and eat food in the market.
She indicated that, the situation is affecting sales in the market because customers have stopped buying from them.
Madam Yakubu called on government and the Central Gonja District Assembly to clear the the waste from the market and lakeside to prevent flooding and other diseases.
The Assemblyman for Buipe electoral area, Tamimu Nuhu Boagye, speaking to Adom News, said he informed the Assembly about the plight of the traders to no avail.
He said the main gutter linking the market to the Black Volta Lake has been blocked by the heavy waste, causing flooding whenever it rains.
Mr. Boagye added that, the only public toilet in the market is managed by an individual, and whenever it’s full, it is emptied into the Black Volta, which is just a two-minute walk from the main market.
The Assemblyman is therefore appealing to the government, NGOs, and other stakeholders to come to their aid to address the waste problem.
He also appealed to the Buipe District Assembly to implement by-laws in the market and on the Black Volta.
In response to the sanitation issue on the Black Volta, the DCE for Central Gonja, Salia Kamara, said he is working hard to have the waste collected and has written to Savannah Diamond Cement in Buipe to help him with a tipper truck to collect the rubbish for disposal.
