Our elections now defined in monetary terms – Dr Yaw Perbi

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the HuD Group, Dr Yaw Perbi is worried about how politics and elections in Ghana have been redefined in monetary terms.

He explained that, politics in Ghana now is such that people are elected not based on their competence or vision but based on their level of affluence.

The CEO emphasised that people do not trust the electoral process to select leaders with the right intentions, competence, and care to drive the nation forward because they are aware of how votes are obtained.

Speaking on the JoyFM Super Morning Show (SMS), Dr. Perbi said “they know that the votes were bought, so right from the onset, the process itself is fraught, and if you have a process fraught with issues, you know that the end result is not going to be satisfactory.”

The CEO mentioned that, there is a perception that election results are manipulated, especially by the Electoral Commission (EC).

“I saw somebody responding to the NDC’s Dr. Omane’s social media post a few days ago, saying no, let’s not have these regional collation centers; that is where the stealing happens, but constitutionally we are supposed to have that, so that cannot be removed. So, there is the perception that we do not get what we vote for because of the system itself,” he said.
