2024 Olympic Games Star Athlete: Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, Jamaica, Women’s 100m, 200m

With the Olympics coming up as in yesterday, GOtv is here to keep you clued up on who’s going to be taking part in the world spectacle. Let’s take a deeper dive into the profile of Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, who is a Jamaican track and field athlete. What sets Shelly apart? She is widely regarded as one of the greatest athletes of all time.

When Fraser-Pryce started off her Olympic journey, she faced adversity because there were many people who thought she was too young and inexperienced to compete at the highest level. In the 2008 Olympics, she proved that she was more than able to do the job by winning gold in the 100m, replicating the success of her compatriot Usain Bolt the night before.

At the 2012 Olympics in London, the Jamaican did it again and successfully defended the 100m gold medal and further cemented herself as a sprint legend. Fraser-Pryce has confirmed that the 2024 Olympics in Paris is going to be the “last dance” for her, and she certainly hopes to close it off with a bang. She stated that her priority lies with taking care of her son and husband.

“My son needs me. My husband and I have been together since before I won in 2008. He has sacrificed for me,” she said in an interview with Essence magazine. “We’re a partnership, a team. And it’s because of that support that I’m able to do the things that I have been doing for all these years. And I think I now owe it to them to do something else.”

She’s a three-time Olympic gold medal winner, and an eight-time medalist. Even though she’s not as young as she once was, she still shouldn’t be undermined. Fraser-Pryce has had an up and down season thus far, but she remains hopeful that she’ll be able to finish strong.

“It has been such a trying season – I think every athlete carries their own share of burdens and problems [but we’ve] all got to get to the line, so I’m really grateful,” she says.
