The Member of Parliament for Agotime-Ziope, Charles Agbeve, has initiated an irrigation project aimed at promoting food production and enhancing the local economy in his constituency.
The project’s first phase involves constructing a dam in Wortikpo, a community in the Agotime-Ziope District of the Volta Region.
This dam will enable all-season farming, thereby improving the livelihoods of the residents.
The lack of water for irrigation has been a significant barrier for farmers, preventing them from engaging in year-round farming.
This challenge prompted the MP to launch the irrigation project, beginning with the Wortikpo community.
He also clarified that, the initiative is not part of the government’s one village one dam policy, but rather his own initiative supported by the community members.
Mr Agbeve stated that his goal is to reduce the dependency on imported farm produce from neighbouring countries by empowering local farmers to cultivate crops during the dry seasons when prices are typically higher.
He encouraged the residents of Wortikpo to utilize the dam for irrigation farming in January and February to boost their income and improve their livelihoods.
He also announced plans to expand the initiative to other parts of the Agotime-Ziope Constituency, ensuring a continuous supply of food to strengthen the local economy.
In addition, Mr. Agbeve urged the youth to consider agriculture as a viable and profitable career option rather than relying on others for income.
Community members expressed their gratitude to the MP for his support and appealed to the government and NGOs for additional machinery to help expand their farms.
They highlighted the difficulties they face during the dry season when they have to halt farming due to the lack of rain, noting that the MP’s initiative will significantly aid their agricultural efforts.
