Ghanaian MPs, clerk caught up in Kenya protests but High Commission assures safety [Video]

Some Ghanaian members of Parliament were caught up in the ongoing demonstrations in Kenya.

The legislators, mostly from the Local Government Committee, were in the country’s Parliament when the riots took a violent turn outside.

A video sighted by Myjoyonline depicts the legislators being moved to safety somewhere in the building.

Among the people seen in the amateur footage filmed by Asuogyaman MP, Thomas Ampen Nyarko was MP for Bortianor-Ngleshie Amanfro Sylvester Tetteh.

The other MPs, who were caught in the protests, are Emmanuel Akwasi Gyamfi and Nii Lante Vanderpuye – the MPs are all from Parliament’s Local Government Committee.

The delegation also included a clerk from parliament, Anita Quartey-Papafio, in charge of Governance Cluster Committees.

Meanwhile, Ghana’s High Commissioner to Kenya has assumed that the Ghanaian community is safe.

Speaking on JoyNews’ Africa Connect a while ago, Damptey Asare indicated that “there’s no unfortunate incident involving any Ghanaian or any member of the Ghanaian community so far no casualties amongst any Ghanaian community.”

Kenya protest

Today, four protesters were shot outside parliament, an NGO, the Kenya Human Rights Commission, said

It said one person was killed. This has not been confirmed from other sources.

“Such actions are unacceptable and constitute a grave violation of human rights,” it added.

Protesters can be seen pushing to enter parliament, where MPs have just voted to approve the controversial finance bill, which raises some taxes.
