A 19-year-old mother, Hadiza says that she will abandon her 5-month-old child if she cannot find anyone willing to take her in.
According to her, she is from a broken home and does not have any family members who are able to help her care for her child.
“I don’t have money to buy food at all. My baby and I have not eaten anything.”
Speaking to Nhyira and Luv FM in Kumasi, she revealed that she lived with her aunt who did not treat her well and decided to run away to search for her mother.
“When I got to Ejisu to look for my mother, I did not find her but rather found my aunty who accepted me. My mother returned home drunk and cursed my aunt for taking me in. My mother then put me on the streets to fend for myself where I was raped. “
According to Hadiza, after she was raped, she met a man who helped her get a job.
Hadiza stated that she worked with a woman at KNUST Junction, where they sold food and that is where she met her boyfriend who later abandoned her.
“I stayed with my boyfriend in Ejisu and got eight months pregnant. I complained to him that I couldn’t work in this state but he still forced me to. I caught him cheating on me but when I complained, he beat me up and threw me out of his house.”
“I moved to another place where prostitutes lived. The girls asked me to join them or they would sack me, so I had to leave because I could not do what they were doing.”
Hadiza revealed that she had been threatened by her boyfriend’s family, who have warned her not to come near them.
However, the Ashanti Regional Director of Social Welfare, Patrick Nawal, is assisting the mother and her child to access shelter and healthcare.
In addition to providing support for the mother and child, the Ashanti Regional Director of Social Welfare has also announced plans to investigate the allegations made by the mother.
“I have spoken to the residential home for children and discussed with them. We spoke to the Safe Child Advocacy and they have agreed to cater for them temporarily. We will write a report to find the father of the baby.”
