‘My cousin has picked a name for her son but the poor kid is going to get bullied for it’

-

Every day, all over the world babies are born and given names.

Often a lot of thought goes into a name choice and there are plenty of things to consider, for instance how it sounds with the surname, what the initials will look like and if there are any negative connotations associated with it.

A couple recently thought they’d found the perfect name for their unborn son – but their cousin pointed out a major flaw.

The family have the surname Leicester and they want to give their baby a first name beginning with M and a middle name beginning with O.

The parents are planning to nickname their baby, Mo, so it will be Mo Leicester, which the cousin couldn’t help but notice sounds an awful lot like the word ‘molester’.

Uh oh.

The cousin came under fire for raising her concerns with her family, so decided to take to Reddit to see what others thought of the name.

The 21-year-old unnamed woman wrote: “I have a married cousin who has always been sort of holier-than-thou in our family just because she is the oldest, rather successful and first to settle down.

“She is pregnant with her first child, a son, and has announced the name. Both are family names, and the middle actually is after our grandfather.

“The name would be perfectly fine if it wasn’t for the surname. The initials of the name is M. O. and her surname is Leicester (pronounced ‘Lester’).”

She continued: “I saw the obvious red flags in the name, and texted her saying, ‘Are you sure about the baby name, just say Mo Leicester out loud.’ She replied, ‘Yeah it’s a lovely name, anyways we’re just calling him Mo, he’ll be called by his first name at school.’

“I left it after that, as she’s pretty hard to argue with – until she posted a picture of a babygro with  Mo Leicester  emblazoned across it. I then texted her, ‘Your kid is really gonna get bullied when his classmates can put two and two together.’

These comments upset the mum-to-be who reported back to her family.

The cousin said she was then accused of being “jealous” because she was still single and wouldn’t be having a baby anytime soon.

However the cousin isn’t the only one who can see an issue with the name.

The pregnant woman’s brother also thinks it’s “ridiculous” and tried to talk to her husband, but he thinks Mo is a “cool” name, like the runner Mo Farah.

Fellow Reddit users also agreed that the name choices were awful.

One person even went as far as to say it was “abuse” because the kid could be bullied for it one day.

Another replied: “Don’t doom the poor kid.”

Someone else said: “OOF that is unfortunate. I was all ready to say it’s never good to criticize a new parent’s baby name choice but in this case, that nickname last name combo is gonna be terrible.”138208672551

A third wrote: “Yeah wow when you started going on about the initials I was like okay…… who cares? No one says (first initial middle initial) full last name so while unfortunate, it’s something no one would notice. THEN you tell us these parents want this kid to be called Mo. yikes.”

A different user added that the parents are “a**holes” if they go ahead with this name for their son as “it’s really selfish and hopelessly optimistic”.
