Three lessons to learn from the lockdown for a happy marriage

-

Truth is stranger than fiction and nothing explains this better than the current situation. Coronavirus or COVID 19, has made us face some harsh realities, which have nevertheless left a mark in our lives. For example, we would have never realised that we can do the same amount of office work from home or we have so many things we need that we have left unused or ignored for long. Likewise, the lockdown has also taught us some valuable lessons related to relationships and marriage. What we learnt during these difficult times can help us strengthen the bond we share with our life partner.
Marriage is all about equality
Had the lockdown not happened, we would not have understood how heavy the burden of household chores is. Mostly our support staff like cooks, maids, gardeners etc., took care of the chores. in their absence, the couples have to do the household chores and their office work simultaneously. Now, in many households, the woman is expected to look after the domestic chores. The fault lies in our social conditioning that teaches young children about the rigid gender roles in marriage. However, there are also families where the husband and wife are shouldering the domestic responsibilities equally. And they indeed are happy families. The lockdown has taught us about how equality of so important in a marriage.

Spending quality time together The lockdown has taught us the importance of spending quality time with a spouse or life partner. Given our hectic schedule, we end up compromising with the time we should be spending at home. And over the years, we either end up believing our spouse would understand or we start taking them for granted. This results in growing emotional distrust or differences between two partners. The lockdown has shown us how beautifully a couple can bond with each other when they spend time together. Yes, there would be disagreements and infringement of personal space when two people are forced to spend time in confined space. But at the same time, they would also realise how important companionship is when they have to overcome some difficult and challenging times.

Marriage is all about teamwork
Just like office is all about teamwork, marriage too isn’t any different. What happens when one member of the team refuses or fails to co-operate? The entire team falls apart, right? Similarly, a successful and happy marriage is like a well-oiled machine where both the spouses work in tandem like teammates in a team. The lockdown has taught us this valuable lesson of teamwork in a marriage, without which this beautiful bond will fall apart. When both the spouses shoulder their responsibilities together, they can overcome these difficult times without any damage.

Let’s hope that once the lockdown ends, we cherish these lessons we learnt during the most challenging times of our lives.
