The National Coordinator in-charge of Port Health, Dr Dennis Laryea, has said self-quarantining will prevent the spread of Covid-19.
Dr Laryea says the call by the public for the government to start isolating people entering the country is a right call, however, individuals can quarantine themselves to prevent the spread of the disease in case it is detected in the country.
He made the call on Adom FM’s Burning Issues on Monday, March 2, 2020.
He explained it was the responsibility of every Ghanaian to ensure even if one person has the disease in the country, it would not spread to others and then the Ghana government will implement seclusion of people if the need be.
The Public Health expert additionally explained to host, Akua Boakyewaa Yiadom, how those who are being quarantined in other countries such as the United States and United Kingdom are being done strategically since it is only those who have been evacuated from highly risked areas who are the ones being confined.
Dr Laryea also allayed the fears of Ghanaians that the percentage of people who have contracted the disease to the population of China is infinitesimal.
It is because of that fact that the World Health Organisation has not placed any ban on traveling, international trade and other cross boundary interactions.
So far, there have been 30 suspected cases in Ghana, according to the Head of Port Health which have all tested negative.
He debunked a death in the Ashanti region which was attributed to the disease.
The public have, however, been advised to always adopt some courtesies irrespective of an outbreak and adhere to them such as covering the mouth when coughing to avoid the possible transfer of other infections.
