For the first time in 12 years, a passenger train from Takoradi to Tarkwa has commenced operation.
The transport service has been out of operation since September 13, 2007 when the railways system broke down.
The Ghana Railway Company Limited in 2019 took over the line for rehabilitation works and has announced its completion accompanied by test runs by the Authority.

The Company promised free rides from Takoradi to Tarkwa on January 28, 30 and 31 and the excitement on the faces of commuters who joined the first free ride said it all.
The train departed from the Takoradi station to Tarkwa with the first batch of passengers at 6:15 am and is expected to depart from the Tarkwa station back to Takoradi at 3:00 pm.
The train had on board representatives from the Ministry of Railways Development, Ghana Railway Company Limited, Ghana Railway Workers Union as well as some technical team and administrative staff of the Company.
Official commencement of commercial services is set for February 5, 2020.
