EC can only implement ROPAL if…

-

The Electoral Commission (EC) has said the implementation of the Representation of the Peoples’ Amendment Law (ROPAL) in the December 2020 polls will be possible if given the needed resources.

Director of Electoral Services at the Commission, Dr Serebour Quaicoe, said they have submitted the budget but the green light will depend on the recommendations of the committee set up to ensure its smooth implementation.

A High Court in Accra in 2017 ordered the EC to begin the process of implementing the ROPAL. It follows the Commission’s inability to allow Ghanaians abroad to exercise their franchise.

After a long litigation, some Ghanaians, who hauled the EC to court, won and were assured they would be able to vote in the 2020 elections.

Months to the elections and the electoral body seems not ready for ROPAL given the number of Ghanaians abroad.

But, speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme Thursday, Dr Quaicoe said they are ready to implement ROPAL if their budget is approved.

He noted that they, together with the committee made up of political parties, are working closely with Ghanaian missions abroad.

Dr Quaicoe further noted that though it is impossible to implement ROPAL in every country, they will do their best to register as many Ghanaians who are willing to vote as possible.
