National Deputy Director of Communications for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Anthony Kwaku Boahen, has suggested to the government that prize monies given ‘national best farmers’ be shared among all farmers in the country.

He was of the view that the huge sum given to a single farmer adjudged the ‘national best farmer’ can better the lot of farmers across the country.
“I disagree with the norm that only a few farmers are honoured on Farmers’ Day, while the remaining are left to rot in their poverty, I think all farmers on Farmers’ Day should have the best farmer prize money equally distributed among them,” he noted on Dwaso Nsem on Adom FM.

He also said the produce of farmers should be prevented from rotting in villages because of difficulty in transporting them to the urban areas and be added to the feeding menu of senior high school students to avoid wastage.
“In a bumper harvest season, instead of allowing food stuff to rot in the villages because of difficulty in farmers transporting them to the urban areas, they should be given to the over 2,000 senior high schools in the country for the students to consume, instead of allowing them go waste,” he said.

Ghana on Friday marked its 35th National Farmers’ Day Celebration to recognise efforts of farmers, fishermen and other agricultural workers to food production in the country.
This year’s edition saw Mr Charles Gyamfi, emerge as the nation’s best farmer, taking home an amount of GH¢ 536,000.00.
