Referendum cancellation a pity – MP

-

National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament for Amenfi Central in the Western region has described the withdrawal of the December referendum as a pity.

According to Peter Kwakye Ackah, President Nana Akufo-Addo should have allowed the referendum to take place as scheduled to garner the views of Ghanaians.

“I listened to the press conference of the president on the referendum and I felt sad because if he wanted a consensus before the referendum, then there would be no need for the election because we all can’t go for one side; so definitely there will be  ‘Yes’ and ‘No’ votes,” he said.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Monday, the legislator said the referendum would have been a test case on the popularity of the Akufo-Addo-led government and their achievements.

“The withdrawal is a pity and the success or failure of the referendum would have determined if president Akufo-Addo still has touch with Ghanaians after his massive one million votes difference in the 2016 elections. It would have also been a prelude for the 2020 elections,” he argued.

To Mr Ackah, the withdrawal clearly shows the president has lost the support of Ghanaians.

President Akufo-Addo on Sunday cancelled the much talked about referendum scheduled for December 17, 2019.

In an address to the nation on the referendum, the President said the withdrawal was due to lack of consensus on the process.

“There has to be a clear national consensus and agreement among the populace that a particular entrenched provision no longer serves the interest of the people, and, thus, has to be removed,” the president said.
