The incumbent New Patriotic Party (NPP) has described the position of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) on the December referendum as shocking.
According to the NPP, the NDC at series of engagements demonstrated its commitment towards the amendment of Article 5593 which makes the U-turn an unpatriotic betrayal.
“We are here to express our shock and outrage at the NDC to campaign for a ‘No Vote’ in the December 17, referendum. It is a naked show of deceit on the part of the largest opposition party in Ghana,” General Secretary of the NPP, John Boadu said.

Addressing a press conference on Monday, Mr Boadu stated with strong conviction that the referendum on election of Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCE’s) was not to NPP’s political advantage.
“The president in the supreme interest of the people of Ghana heeded to the growing calls to trade in the power of the president in the appointment of the MMDCEs for citizens to elect them,” he said.
He added “If partisan advantage was of interest to Akufo-Addo, we wouldn’t have selflessly spent the last three years campaigning for this amendment.”

According to the party, a ‘Yes’ vote will further polarise the nation, particularly local communities along the lines of NPP-NDC, and will likely lead to the creation of “NDC Communal Labour day” and “NPP Communal Labour day”, as well as “NDC market” and “NPP market.”
