Free SHS numbers jump from 400,000 to 794,899

The Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta says the free Senior High School (SHS) education has recorded significant enrollment.

According to the Minister, records display an increase in beneficiaries from 400,000 in 2017 to 794,899 students in 2018/2019 academic. The figures are expected to rise to 1,264,000 million in 2020.

“Government will continue to invest in the education sector by providing adequate infrastructure, improving appropriate regulatory systems and building the capacity of teachers across the country to enhance quality human capacity development,” he said.

He added that, there are ongoing constructions of about 960 structures including classroom blocks, dormitories and auxiliary facilities that will ease congestion in schools.

He further said the government is focused on expanding and upgrading tertiary institutions to absorb the high growth in student numbers.

“Work has begun on a comprehensive expansion and retooling exercise concerning technical institutions,” he added.
