Finance Minister explains delay in road contractors’ arrears payment

Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, has explained reasons behind the delay in the payment of arrears owed road contractors in the country.

Speaking in an interview with Accra-based Peace FM, monitored by Adomonline.com, Mr Ofori-Atta said road contracts awarded to contractors under the erstwhile administration were not properly done, hence the need for the government to review the contracts by the Auditor-General.

According to the Minister, roads constructed by the contractors were poorly done and as such government did not want to pay huge sums of money to undeserving contractors.

“But with the GH¢ 2.2 billion arrears, and GH¢ 7.9 billion for commencement to continue through next year, almost 82% of all road contractors have been paid,” he said.

Payment of the GH¢ 2.2 billion arrears owed road contractors by the government followed the incessant plea of the Association of Road Contractors over the debt, which they claimed was collapsing the businesses of its members.
