Gov’t engaging General Legal Council on legal education reforms – Minister

-

Information Minister, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, has said the government has begun engaging the General Legal Council and relevant stakeholders on a review of the legal education system in Ghana with the aim of increasing access to legal education.

According to Mr Nkrumah, the government is focusing on three approaches in its engagement with the GLC to address the concerns raised by students of the Ghana School of law.

We are looking at the short and medium-term reforms, which will focus on admission space and long term approaches with regard to the regulation and administration of the Ghana Law School and legal education in Ghana, he explained.

Speaking in an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, Hon Nkrumah described the review as a necessary step to strengthening legal education in Ghana.

We must get to the point where the General Legal Council does not necessarily administer the education but rather accredits and regulates institutions in collaboration with the National Accreditation Board and they administer the education at various parts in the country, he said.

This will help people to benefit from legal exams from these accredited institutions while the General Legal Council regulates the bar exams, he explained.
