Information Minister, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, has described as unhealthy what he called attempts to run down Asantehene Otumfuo Osei-Tutu II and the chieftaincy institution in the country.

Speaking at a media briefing in Accra Wednesday, the Information Minister said the government does not expect individuals and politicians to run down the chieftaincy institution because of the roles they play in national development.

It is disappointing that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has chosen to attack Otumfuo for his comments. We consider the invitation of Otumfuo to speak as a mark of high respect for the traditional authority and so it is bad to run down traditional authority or his personality. We should be very careful and desist from such attacks,” he said.

Former President Mahama, through the former Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, challenged claims made by the Asante King during his speech at the United Nations that he played a role in getting the losing candidate in the 2016 elections to concede defeat.

The NDC subsequently held a news conference to clarify their position amidst accusations the New Patriotic Party is pitching them against the king for cheap political gains.
