Y’asem Nie: Most ‘Goro boys’ are former employees at DVLA, Passport Office [audio]

It has emerged that, middlemen known as ‘Goro boys’ stationed at the Registrar Generals Department, Passport Office and the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) are former employees.

According to reports, these are former National Service Personnel who have turned middlemen, popularly known as ‘Goro boys’ due to the unemployment situation in the country.

Mr Rockson Addei, a ‘Goro boy’, made this disclosure on ‘Y’asem Nie’, a segment dedicated to listeners of Adom FM’s morning show, Dwaso Nsem, Wednesday.

He said the students, after their National Service, gained access to sensitive area at DVLA or passport office, thus, use their contacts to make money.

Currently, due to the paperless system, Mr Addei said most of his colleagues now bring laptops to the passport office and do online registration for clients.

“We offer speed to clients than the government institutions and they are prepared to pay because we are reliable,” he added.

Citing himself as an example, he said he became a ‘Goro boy’ after working with the Ghana Water Company for many years due to the struggle in getting his birth certificate.

After waiting for some months, eventually, he said a friend’s aunty assisted him and immediately he became an agent.

“From that time, I have been assisting people get their passports, birth certificates and other documentations and I’m making money,” he stated.

The Technical University graduate noted that delays, especially time spent to acquire driver’s license or passport is promoting activities of the ‘Goro boys’.

“You can’t blame us for being ‘Goro boys’; we are simply solving a problem at a small fee,” he added.
