Minister for Education, Dr Matthew Opoku-Prempeh in lauding the teachers’ licensure exam initiative says it is good for the teachers and to a larger extent makes them experts in the teaching field.
The licensure exam, after it was rolled out in 2018 by the Ghana Education Service and the National Teaching Council, was met with stiff resistance from some newly-trained teachers.
Speaking in an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, the Minister said:

“The licensure exam is good for the teachers because it makes them professionals in the teaching career and after the second edition in 2019, teachers who pass the licensure exam will be posted in September.”
Dr Opoku-Prempeh added that “the examination, held in Colleges of Education in Ghana, seeks to ensure that only qualified teachers are employed to teach, as a way of improving the standard of teaching.”

With the first licensure exam on September 10, 2018 with over 28,000 newly-trained teachers sitting for the exam, 21,287 teachers, representing 74% passed, while 7,432 failed.
