Visitors at Atwedia can defecate only in the bush

-

Residents of Atwedia, a farming community in the Asante Akyem South Municipality in the Ashanti region, are appealing to the government to help construct toilet facilities in the area.

Headteacher of Atwedia Presby Primary School, William Boadi, lamented about how the pupils on daily basis are compelled to clear faecal matter before accessing their classrooms for lessons.

“Anytime visitors come to the community, there are no washrooms available for them and so they are left with no other choice than to join us in the bush. We, therefore, call on authorities to provide the area with toilet facilities to avoid any disease outbreak,” he appealed.

Speaking in an interview with Adom News, the pupils also explained that the call for toilet facilities became necessary because of how bad the situation had become.

Information gathered by Adom News’ reporter, Isaac Amoako suggested that the lack of toilet facilities in the area had forced residents to resort to open defecation where they defecate indiscriminately on school compounds, bushes or anywhere they find convenient.

Ernest Apawu, the assemblyman for Atwedia electoral area, disclosed that he had on several occasions written to the assembly about the situation but nothing had been done to resolve the problem.
