About one-third of women go on a date for free meals: Study

-

1. A study says a third of women go on a date for free food

Why do people go on a date? To meet the person of their interest or love and perhaps for a little bit of romance as well. Will you be surprised if we tell you food can be the reason for some people to go on a date?. A recent study has concluded that some women go on a date just because they want to relish a free meal and might have nothing to do with romance or understanding the other person better.

2. The concept of ‘foodie calls’

The researchers at the Azusa Pacific University tried understanding the concept of ‘foodie calls’ where an individual intentionally goes on a date to enjoy free food and is not romantically interested in the other person. In fact, it can happen when the person is short on budget or is simply tempted to try a new restaurant. This study was published in the ‘Society for Personality and Social Psychology’ journals and was done on two different groups of women.

3. The first group

In the first study, 820 women were asked a bunch of questions related to their beliefs, personality traits, gender roles and their relationship status.

4. The next step

Next, they were asked if they have ever engaged in foodie-calls and whether it was socially acceptable or not? Going by the statistics, 85 per cent of these participants were heterosexuals and were the main focus of the study.

5. The finding

About 23 per cent of the participants confessed to going on a date to just enjoy a free meal. The women who had engaged in foodie calls found this trend to be acceptable but however, most of the women in the group believed it was extremely to moderately unacceptable.

6. The second group

In the second study, the researchers asked the same set of questions to 357 heterosexual women and 33 per cent accepted of engaging in foodie calls.

7. Personality-decoded

The researchers suggested that women who engaged in foodie calls were more likely to have ‘dark triad’ personality traits, namely ‘psychopathy, Machiavellianism, and narcissism.’

In simpler words, such women were more likely to exhibit deceptive and exploitative behaviour traits in romantic relationships that could include one-night stands, faking an orgasm, or sending unsolicited sexual pictures.

8. However

The researchers clarified that foodie calls can occur in many types of relationship and are not gender specific. In fact, all the participants of this study were females and we wonder what the findings would have been if men were also interviewed.
