Audio: What triggered Suame riot against Nigerians

-

It has emerged that the rampaging youth, who vandalised shops belonging to Nigerians at Suame in the Ashanti region over the incessant kidnappings in the country, were mocked at.

A member of the Ghana Union Traders Association, Ben Yeboah on Adom FM’s morning show, Dwaso Nsem, Wednesday claimed that when their members were lamenting over the issue, their Nigerian counterparts were mocking them, claiming they have even compromised the police.

This position, he claimed, angered the irate youth who were peeved about the Nigerians engaging in the retail sub-sector – a preserve of Ghanaians.

The rampaging youth, who wore red bands and attires after destroying Nigerian shops, also lit car tyres as part of their protest.

The Nigerians were forced to close their shops temporarily on Friday, June 14, 2019 over what they described as attacks from their Ghanaian counterparts.

Some of their shops were vandalised by the youth in the area which led to a near-clash between the Nigerians and the Ghanaians.

The police have been deployed to the scene to maintain law and order.

But, Mr Yeboah said the police protection for the Nigerian retailers will not deter their members from ensuring they abide by the law.
