Head coach of Karela United, Johnson Smith, has claimed that Kumasi Asante Kotoko and Accra Hearts of Oak players normally get national team call ups because of pressure from their numerous supporters.

Oscar Tabarez, as he is affectionately called, believes the fans of the two most glamorous clubs in Ghana always base on their numbers to intimidate technical handlers of the national teams to get their players selected.

According to him, during national team selection, the handlers shouldn’t limit their scope but cast their net wider to include other clubs’ players.

“National team call-ups shouldn’t be limited to Kotoko and Hearts only, it should cut across. When Karela player is picked people will ask, which player is this? So the technical handlers have also made their minds not to consider the smaller teams during national team call-ups,” he told Asempa Sports.

“Hearts and Kotoko fans are those that put pressure on the technical team and they [administrators] also listen to them and pick their players; but if Karela, Medeama and players of other teams are not selected, no official or supporter complains,” he added.

Though Karela United have been eliminated from the Tier 2 of the Ghana Football Association Special Competition, they are still in the semi-finals of the Tier 1 and will play AshantiGold SC on June 16.
