Five dead as Takoradi floods

At least five people have been confirmed dead in the Friday torrential downpour in Takoradi in the Western region.

The Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) director James Obeng Jnr. who confirmed the incident told Empire News’ Emmanuel Ohene-Gyan that the deaths occurred at Ngyeresia, a fishing community in Sekondi when a mud house collapsed on a family.

The Western Regional capital was on Friday, May 31 taken over by floods.

Areas such as Anaji, Effiekuma, Sekondi, Kwansarodo, Intankoful among others were completely submerged by the torrential rainfall.

Roads in the capital, including Bankyease-I Adu, Effiekuma No9 police quarters, Anaji Choice Mart have been rendered inaccessible by the floods.

Empire News’ Emmanuel Ohene-Gyan, who went round to monitor the dire situation, reports the police rushed in to manage and direct both drivers and passengers to access safe routes.

Ohene-Gyan added that several property running into millions of cedis have been destroyed as a result of the rains.

A source at the Sekondi Takoradi Metropolis revealed that the Mayor, together with some officials, would be embarking a tour of the city to assess the havoc caused by the rain.

Meanwhile, three people lost their lives in Wednesday’s heavy downpour in Accra, the NADMO has confirmed.

According to NADMO, though there could be more harm in connection with the downpour, they do not expect to register any more deaths.

The heavy rainfall resulted in the flooding of several places in Accra and its environs. Notable among the flooded areas in the capital included the Kwame Nkrumah Circle and Dome.
