AMA blames citizens for Accra floods

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) is blaming Ghanaians for having a hand in the city’s flooding problems.

According to the Public Relations Officer of the AMA, Mr Gilbert Ankrah, some residents contribute to the floods as a result of constant littering and building of illegal structures on waterways.

“Floods in Accra are very worrying but I will blame some Ghanaians for being a part of this problem because we fail to do what is right. Even when it rained yesterday, a video went viral showing a woman putting refuse in an already choked gutter. This is very bad,” he said on Accra based Neat FM monitored by Adomonline.com.

Mr Ankrah’s comment follows flooding in some parts of Ghana’s capital, Accra, after 50 minutes of rainfall.

Homes, offices and shops in the busy Accra suburb of Odawna and Adabraka in the Klottey Korle Constituency were reduced to streams after some minutes of rains Wednesday afternoon.

The community’s many link roads and alleys were heavily flooded, rendering the roads impassable. A police rapid response team strategically parked at a safe point in the floods and flashed its emergency vehicle lighting to ward off any hero-seeking driver not to attempt wading through hazard.

Many drivers and commuters in nearby communities were also forced to make long detours or had to park and wait till the floods receded.

But to the AMA PRO, ordinary Ghanaians have to share some of the blame for the floods.

He said his outfit and other local authorities are working hard to deal with the filth situation that had engulfed the metropolis.

Mr Ankrah also indicated that the Assembly had already begun the dredging of the Korle Lagoon in Accra as the rainy season commences.

The process, which began last month, is to mitigate the impact of the perennial flooding.
