Ghana and Enugu Rangers goalkeeper, Nana Bonsu, has revealed that referees play crucial roles in the outcome of matches not only in Ghana, but in Nigeria as well.
Bonsu signed for Enugu Rangers of Nigeria on January 31, 2016.
According to him, some officiating officials in the Nigerian league are so corrupt that every game outcome; win, draw or lose depends solely on the referee and not the team’s performance on the day.
“The game here is such that if you don’t give the referee something, regardless of you being the home team, you will be robbed. He will manipulate the match in such a way that you will be scored; as for that the referees don’t joke with that,” he noted in an interview on Asempa FM.
The 30-year-old goalkeeper, who was adjudged player of the month in February 2016, further revealed that though the league is full of bribery and corruption, he is yet to see for himself how matches are influenced through the referees.
“Personally, I have not seen any referee taking something from somebody but our team [Enugu Rangers] for instance, they rob us whether home or away which sometimes baffles us; but what can we do?” he quipped.
The former Ashanti Gold SC shot-stopper was named the most outstanding goalkeeper in the 2018/19 CAF Confederation Cup group stage by the Confederation of African Football after making 29 saves for his team during the group stages which was the highest among his peers.
