Management of Power Distribution Services (PDS) has revealed plans to install prepaid meters for residents of the Lower Manya Krobo municipality in the Eastern region as a way of resolving the frequent clashes between residents and staff of the power company.
Stakeholders at a meeting between the Member of Parliament, Ebenezer Terlarbi, Assembly Members, PDS and the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) agreed on a roadmap to address the recurring clashes in the area over non-payment of bills.

Speaking in an interview on Accra-based Citi News, the Head of Public Relations for PDS, William Boateng stated that the installation of prepaid meters could be the best solution moving forward.
“Going forward, we think that the best solution is to get them prepaid meters. We will consider it. But we are talking also about money. The prepaid metering is not free and so we will have to access some money before we can go into that particular project,” he said.

There was tension in the Lower Manya Municipality during an attempt by the PDS to undertake a mass disconnection exercise in the area over unpaid bills leading to the death of a 24-year-old man with others sustaining injuries.
However, after a successful meeting by stakeholders, a roadmap towards a resolution of the clash was rolled out by PURC with a focus on a rescheduling payment plan for customers in the municipality.
