Court remands three over 27 parcels of ‘wee’

An Accra Circuit Court has remanded three young women for possessing 27 slabs of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp.

Beatrice Agbalenyo, Ellen Ama Egbi, both 25 and Rukaya, 24, who have all been charged with abetment of crime, possession of narcotic drugs without lawful authority, pleaded not guilty to all counts on the charge sheet.

They are to reappear on Monday, December 24th.

Prosecuting, Police Sergeant Princess Boafo told the court presided over by Mr Aboagye Tandoh that the Prosecution witnesses are police officers whiles the accused persons are all unemployed.

She said on December 6, this year, at about 1200 hours the accused were on board a bus with the registration number GR 116 -17, from Accra to the Volta region.

Their bus was intercepted by a Police patrol team at Akuse Junction, She said a search revealed that two back-packs and one lady’s handbag was containing the slabs, whiles an additional 31 pieces of wraps were found in a black polythene bag.

Sergeant Boafo said, the accused persons claimed ownership of the bags and they were arrested.

She said in their statements they said someone in Accra asked them to send those parcels to another person in the Volta region.

She said efforts were being made to identify the one whom they are alleging was supposed to receive the drugs.

Mr George Asomaning, their lawyer in pleading for bail said Beatrice was nursing a baby whereas Rukaya was pregnant thus, they should be allowed to be attending court from home.

He told the court that if the accused had been charged for abetment, then the driver of the vehicle should as well be arrested for helping to transport the substance.

Mr Asomaning said, the supposed receiver was known in Hohoe in the Volta region and should be arrested instead of his clients because they were only deceived to believe the bags contained Christmas parcels
