The General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia has admitted giving a wrong figure concerning the New Patriotic Party (NPP)’s filing fees.
He has, however, justified his party’s decision to charge Ghc400,000 filing fee as recently announced for flagbearer aspirants by the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC).
Mr Nketia has said that NPP charged Ghc500,000 some three years ago as a filing fee for her flagbearers.

But the NPP, in a strongly-worded statement signed by its Deputy Communication Director, Richard Asante Yeboah, described Mr Nketia’s claims as false.
It stated that the amounts charged for nomination and the filing fees were 10,000 and Ghc75,000, respectively thereby challenging Mr Nketia to prove his allegation or retract and apologise for them.
The statement accused Mr Nketia of “attempting to justify and rationalise what is obviously an obnoxious way of monetizing internal contests and eliminating other contestants.”

But Mr Asiedu Nketia in an exclusive interview on Joy News denied lying about the figure but noted that he will take the corrections in good faith.
“If they claim the filing fee was not Ghc500,000 then I will take their corrections but I want them to know that I know more than they think. An untrue figure doesn’t automatically mean a lie,” he said.
When the host of the show asked him to admit that he lied about the figures, Mr Nketia refused, saying “lying means having something and deliberately telling something that is untrue but everybody is capable of making a mistake,” he stated.

General Mosquito, as he is popularly known, further asked the NPP not to place themselves on moral high grounds as far as filing fees for political parties are concerned.
