Agogo State College shut down ; 22 students arrested over protest

Some 22 students of the Agogo State College in the Asante Akim North District of the Ashanti region, have been arrested by police.

The number, including 18 females, according to the police, are suspected leaders of the protest which took place at the school late Sunday.

A meeting by a committee made of the Regional Education Director and the District Chief Executive ordered the immediate closure of the school.

All students are expected to vacate the campus by 2 PM, Monday.

The students were protesting the acute water shortage and the unavailability of power supply in the school.

Luv FM’s Prince Appiah was at the school and reports that boarding students have to walk long distances to fetch water from other sources every day before going for classes.

The protest resulted in damage to school property, including furniture, air conditioners at the school’s ICT Lab and the school bus.

The guidance and counselling office and the senior house master’s office were all ransacked by the angry students.

Authorities say the students will each be made to pay for the items destroyed during the protest.

Students are expected to report back to school on Saturday, October 6, 2018.
