Central Regional Chairman of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Allotey Jacobs, has chided his party leaders over their late protests against the nomination of Jean Adukwei Mensa as the chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana.

Mr Jacobs who was commenting on the nominations on Adom TV’s Morning Show, Badwam, said his party should be blamed for not acting swiftly to stop the president from making such a bad decision.

He wondered why the party leaders failed to defend Madam Charlotte Osei when she was removed and only resorted to unnecessary commentary without action.

He said when the leaders hinted of protests following the dismal of Charlotte Osei, they failed to consult stakeholders to deliberate on the issue.

The NDC had described Mrs Jean Mensa whose nomination was announced by President Nana Akufo-Addo on Monday as “unfit” to hold the top EC job because she was “a known pro-NPP and an avowed anti-NDC person”.

It said in a statement by its General Secretary, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, that the party would in due course “provide further and better particulars of the open and covert activities of Jean Mensa which makes her unfit to occupy the high position”.

But Mr Jacobs says the failure by the party leaders led to the appointment of the new EC chair.

I wonder why the NDC leaders keep talking. They should have defended Charlotte Osei and taken to the streets to express their disgust. They failed to do that and you are now complaining over the appointment of a new EC chair.

“I expected the NDC leadership to have consulted the stakeholders to see the way forward but they failed,” he said.

This notwithstanding, Mr Allotey Jacobs believes the nomination of the EC chair is a preparatory ground to rigging elections by the NPP.
